Entry 59: Superhero...

for awhile now...
i have been thinking about a problem...

not that i am in that kind of situation...
but its complication within the bounds of the grey area that lies in between what is right and what is wrong intrigue me...
somehow...
the superhero...
or simply ordinary people who are gifted/cursed with superhuman powers never fail to provide me with a platform to dwell deeper into the issues of morality and human concerns...

think for a second...

is an individual blessed with superhuman powers also bestowed the social responsibility to put his power for the benefit of the others?...
if not...
where does the line lie between his bound to society and his personal responsibilities...

if for example...
the superhero in question decided to take a day off to celebrate the birth of his new born child...
and at that very moment in question...
someone suffered a life threatening situation in which his assistance could have resolve the whole issue...
did he do wrong?...
did he let society down?...
whereas at no point did he bound himself to a social contract to save every single person at the best of his capacity...

yet in this case he can so easily be portrayed as a villain...
that he let minute personal matters affect his concern for the people he should be protecting...

but is the birth of his child not important for him?...
quite obviously...
such enchanted moments that define one's life is of huge significance for individuals...
however...
even i have to say they are not comparable to a person's life...
so if let say u were to tell me a person was given a choice...
to save someone or to witness his child's birth...
and he chose the latter...
i will admit i would perceive that person as selfish as well...

but in the shoes of the superhero...
he is not just involved in isolated incidents...
he is always in demand...
so at which point can he say he can stop and take a break?...

would u blame an expert neuro-surgeon when a patient did not get the immediate surgery required because he was on leave?...
would u blame a policeman who for months worked on a case on the mafia when the same criminal group killed innocent bystanders during one of their territorial wars while the said policeman took leave for his wedding?...

for most of us...
we constantly ask for strength...
not to protect everyone in the world...
but to protect those we loved...
yet for a superhero...
the moment he developed his superhuman powers...
he lost his right to do what is best for those he loved...
is this just?...

to a lesser extent...
this extend to normal human beings as well...
we do find ourselves in situation when we need to juggle between choosing to do what is significant for us...
against what is significant for other people in our lives...
in the same way...
we will be judged based on our choices...
though the as crucial as the life and death situations the superhero would face...
but perhaps...
even harder to come up with an objective comparison...
since both events are not as major...
where consequences drastically affect those involved...

but these can lead to deep scar in relationship nevertheless...

when a best friend just had a break up and needed someone to talk to but you already have other commitments...
your loved ones wanted u to spend time with them but you have work matters or friends matters to attend to as well...

what is right and what is wrong?...
how will we be judged?...
